I do consider software MIDI routing more flexible, in a way. EDU Subject: inexpensive-midi-resource.txt (Mac-MIDI report) Please replace the old. Dedicated hardware routing is going to always be tighter, and dedicated hardware routing will work when your computer is turned off. I don't know if software MIDI routing is "better" per se. Hardware's the way to go if you need this ability fast (though, as you pointed out, only the $200+ hardware offers this.)

(There may also be a way to load configurations from a menu, I forget if there is - I only use one routing - but still, menu items aren't the quickest thing.)Ī simple program could be written to make patch changes easier, but patch changes probably would not be very quick. You can set up multiple MIDI OX configurations, but flipping through them involves shutting the software down and restarting with a different configuration. There is not an easy way with this to set up multiple routings and flip through them as "patches". Tested and working in MacOs Monterey 12. If you want to tinker, you can find the source code on GitHub.

MIDI OX then gives you some huge control over this routing. MIDI patchbay lets you hook up your various pieces of MIDI software and hardware and pass MIDI data between them, applying assorted filters on the way. MIDI OX will recognize the MIDI in / out of various control surfaces (like the PadKontrol and the BCR2000) as well as any USB MIDI interface you have. This allowed me to hodgepodge my MIDI setup a bit. It sounds like there is a newer, probably better solution that what I'm looking at, but I'm apparently out of the loop on that topic. If there's a way to instantly choose what controller I want to have control what device, sequence to PC and playback from the PC through the system, without a lot of patching or programming that's what I'm looking for. What I'm trying to avoid is a bunch of plugging and unplugging all the time, or a bunch of menu-driven programming every time I want to do something different.

Other than some of the $200++ units out there (which seem impossible to find) I'm not sure how to do this efficiently. Being able to utilize the multitimbrality on the units through this system would also be ideal. Being able to add a PC connection to this (via another USB/MIDI interface or via USB in the patchbay) would be ideal, so I could sequence whatever I was doing.Being able to play those sequences back through the same system would also be ideal. I'd like to be able to control any of the racks or FX with either of the keys at a monent's notice. In the Help File, it mentions the program as a way to load the sounds into Sibelius, but doesn't describe how, and the only 'manual' that exists for the Patchbay application is a website that only describes hardware channel manipulation.

MIDI Patchbay is a specialized application that was developed specifically in order to provide users with a series of tools for working with the signal to and from their MIDI device, through means of splitting, merging, or applying filters, in accordance to their characteristic requirements.īuilt around an 8 by 8 MIDI interface, the controller will allow one to map all MIDI ports, regardless if we’re talking about the virtual or actual, physical ones, on the audio equipment. Not to mention the hassle of adequately linking the same signal traces to any accompanying software, in order to achieve better control over the physical equipment.

Working with MIDI controllers on multiple channels can pose serious challenges, especially when it comes to splitting or merging the signal.
